Dr. Laila Soueif on Hunger Strike

Dr. Laila Soueif, Alaa Abd El Fattah's mother, today announced that she was going on hunger strike until her son is released from his unjust imprisonment. Dr. Soueif is a highly respected activist and teacher. She is a founding member of the Movement for the Independence of Universities (March 9) and the Kefaya movement - both widely credited with laying important groundwork for the 2011 revolution - and a committed teacher of mathematics at Cairo University.

Starting today she will only drink water, unsugared tea and rehydration solutions.

The Attorney General has been informed, as law dictates.

We will have a full statement from her online soon.
